The Best of Natural Hair in 2012

- I miss Happy Girl Hair!

- I hated some celebrities showcasing poorly maintained natural hair / suspect natural hair (specifically Toya Carter and Nicki Minaj)

- My vote for most beautiful natural hair worn on TV goes to Tempestt Bledsoe currently acting in Guys with Kids

- I learnt that drinking more water could impact your hair strength (orthosilicic acid in water!)

- I loved doing the pH series!

- I loved Nadine's method of African threading (currently wearing my hair this way!) - see it here

- I learnt that manufacturers are really not honest about preservatives and the fact that products do need to be preserved in order to last more than a week outside a fridge - see it here

 - My readers discovered and informed me about a rather harsh SLS free ingredient olefin sulfonate - see it here

- I loved using my microscope and investigating mid shaft splits! More here

 - I revisited deep conditioning again with more investigation into time, temperature and adsorption (with a D!) - more here

What was your favourite piece or pieces  of 2012 on this blog or on another blog?

    1. I love her hair because she wears it open, she switches like every natural would from twist outs to buns. It is nice to see a real representation of natural hair.

  3. I just love your blog overall. You have a very specific niche in the natural hair blogosphere that I don't see anywhere else.

  4. I miss Happy Girl Hair too! On a completely selfish note, a zillion links I gave out to that site are now completely null and void and she didn't even leave archives, arrrrrrrgh!

On a more human note, I can also totally understand her desire to move on with the focus of their lives and maintain the privacy of her children.

I'm just going to weep and wrest with my conscience in a corner over here....

    1. Aww! I also have links that no longer work but I definitely think the privacy of her life is more important. I can also imagine that the blogosphere being what it is, she was probably receiving racist comments on a daily basis. It is definitely not something you want to give energy to. Glad that I got to know the site while it was up!

  7. I just found this blog and you had me at the words science, microscope, evidence based, etc. From one chemist/scientist to another---we need this info.

    Cheers! and Peace!

  8. I agree that you and your blog fill a big gap in the online natural hair community and for this I'm grateful this year and every year. Thank you for the work you do!

This may sound silly but I'm pretty sure it was this year that you discovered via your (your hubby's?) microscope that gray hair is actually transparent. That was one of the coolest tidbits I've learned all year.

Happy New Year to you and yours! :)

  10. I miss Happy Girl Hair too. I learnt about it from this blog and learned so much about hair and products from her too.

Great spotlight on Tempest. It is not in your face natural/massive afro every day type, or so long it is intimidating to those wanting to go natural. It's just hair. Looks great and soft and wonderful that she is comfortable enough with her hair to wear it like that on tv and even better that the network allows her to as well.

  11. I love that deep conditioning piece (think I read it on BGLH first). OMGosh, what did you learn about hair strength and water?!?!? You didn't link any article!! I have been sitting on a post about water and hair for a month now!! I started researching it based upon an observation about my own hair and my water intake. But, I didn't find many articles from scientific sources, though I found a few that I plan to cite. Anywho, I'll have to search your site and see if I can find more details about your learnings!! Thank you for being such an awesome site!

(p.s. It's so funny that I see your post with this pic of Tempestt Bledsoe this evening. Just yesterday, I posted a status about her on my FB page because I stopped on Guys with Kids in passing. I'm always thrown off because she looks so different to me, yet familiar. And, she's so slim!! She looks great and so does her hair!! Anywho, I googled images of her earlier today and saw the first pic!! So, it was just funny to come here and see the same pic!)
