The Body Shop: Best Ingredient Listing Ever!
I am currently working on the sulfate free shampoo post but I did just want to give a huge huge congratulations to the team at the body shop. Without a shadow of a doubt, this is the best ingredient list I have ever seen. After dutifully placing the ingredients in the correct order, they follow up with stating what every ingredient does in the bottle. This really helps the average consumer know what really is in the bottle and why. I have never previously been attracted to The Body Shop but I will now march on down and buy something to my liking simply because such diligence deserves a reward.
Take note manufacturers - this is a very informative and useful way to list ingredients.
Ps- The Body Shop is available in USA (where most of you are) and also here in The Netherlands (where I am now) but I have linked to the UK version (nostalgia)

Good to know. I haven't shopped there in years, maybe I should give my local A'dam one a visit.
ReplyDeleteThat is my favorite spot to indulge! It's not the same since they switched parent companies though.
ReplyDeleteOooh thanks for this i have a body shop voucher I looked at this and sneered at it now its on my to do list. I have been sing aphogee pH shampoo which is okay but has sulphates.
ReplyDeleteThe Body Shop is a great place to indulge your senses! I'm using the Sweet Lemon Whip body lotion, fairly thick and very citrusy. The ingredient list on my bottle is not the like one above so maybe this is a very recent development or only available on the web? Either way, it's still really useful for the discerning consumer! Hopefully other companies follow suit
ReplyDeleteHmmmm cool. I sense alot of companies taking a page out of their book.

That's so cool. I just walked past their store at the mall today. Guess I'll pop in and look around next time.
ReplyDeleteThe Body Shop is available in South Africa too. When I don't have a chance to travel there from Zambia, I just ask someone to pick me up stuff from their store at OR Tambo International Airport. It's a life-saver. You are so right about how they list their ingredients on everything. It is very helpful.
ReplyDeleteI think you may have competetion. The Nothing But by Sofn' Free haircare line has all ingrdients posted with a list also.It shouldbe availabe as the local hair shops as it is fairly new.

I like it when companies post their ingredients as the consumer can then make an informed choice on what they are buying.
Not for anything but as I searched through their other products they weren't as diligent with the ingredient lists.
ReplyDeleteYay!!!!!! I spent the whole day looking for a cheap shampoo. Can you tell us about their Rainforest line??
ReplyDeleteWater (Solvent/Diluent), Sodium Laureth Sulfate (Surfactant), Musa Paradisica (Banana) Fruit (Emollient/Lubricant), Glyceryl Hydroxystearate (Emollient), Lauramide DEA (Surfactant), Cocamidopropyl Betaine (Surfactant), Phenoxyethanol (Preservative), Benzyl Alcohol (Preservative), Sodium Benzoate (Preservative), Panthenol (Skin/Hair Conditioning Agent), Polyquaternium-7 (Hair Conditioner), Stearic Acid (Emulsifier), Sodium Chloride (Viscosity Modifier), Methylparaben (Preservative), Fragrance (Fragrance), Citric Acid (pH Adjuster), Disodium EDTA (Chelating Agent), Butylparaben (Preservative), Ethylparaben (Preservative), Isobutylparaben (Preservative), Propylparaben (Preservative), Ascorbic Acid (Antioxidant), Yellow 5 (Colour), Red 4 (Colour).
ReplyDeleteWeird the Canadian version has sulfates
Maybe because the example shows the ingredients of the conditionner not the shampoo...The image on the right side of the list is a suggestion of the another product (shampoo) fron the same range (banana products)
ReplyDeleteThe shampoo (in France) got's SLS too
Isa
Isa is right, the picture on the side was a suggestion of more products to buy. The ingredient list above pertains to the conditioner.
DeleteI just checked the US Body Shop ingredient list, and it contains SLS!
ReplyDeleteNot the conditioner - shampoo yes
Deleteimo, that ingredient list is a mess - the one posted in the story and the one in the messages.
ReplyDeletepropylene glycol, higher amounts than usual (top half of ingredients) of preservatives, and synthetic (i believe) coloring are all deal breakers for me.
the ingredients for others countries are even worse than the original one posted. but, different countries permit different ingredients.
This post is not a debate about ingredient types. It is a post about how ingredients should be listed.
DeleteIt is a personal choice as to what ingredients you choose to use and what you find work for you. All the things you mentioned as deal breakers for you are deal makers for me especially preservatives (no gunk growing in my conditioner) and humectants (my hair loves them).
I have not ever seen a list like this one which makes an effort to tell the consumer what each ingredient is doing in the bottle - this is what I am praising.
Green People do a similar thing, on their packaging and website, explaining what all the scientific names are in common parlance - doesn't go quite as far as specifying the role of the ingredient but still, it's a step towards clarifying things which I like
ReplyDeleteI will check that out - thanks Jane :)
