The Worst Natural Hair Tutorial Ever!
I really cannot believe what just landed in my inbox. The A reader just sent me to this video which is literally the worst ever expert tutorial I have ever seen. I hope you would never ever do this to your hair. In my opinion, this is a quick way to bald spots and broken hair!
My key complaints are:
1. Way too rough when handling hair
2. The paddle brush use
3. The final result is not a smooth afro at all.
4. The video was clearly intended to be a short clip but the one thing that you cannot do with her hair texture is 'go quickly'. You have to be patient, it would have been better to film the process fully and then edit some of it out.

It is SO BAD.
ReplyDeleteWow!. I hope newbies do not see this. That was rough!
ReplyDeleteI am looking for a press address for typef and tyra - I need to write a strongly worded letter.
ReplyDeleteBut Tyra is dead WRONG for putting this out under her brand.
ReplyDeleteI look at those vids and wonder is this a joke? Clearly her hair does not look good in any of these videos. The rough handling makes me cringe.
ReplyDeleteQuite honestly I have a white girlfriend who knows how to handle my hair better than the woman in the video-I am aaghast. If this was a child she would be in tears!
ReplyDeleteI think there is more to this than meets the eye. Honestly, It’s just too BAD to be true. Maybe some sort of publicity stunt? Will just have to wait and see…………..
ReplyDeleteuuuuuh... what was that? It's bad enough that she's torturing her hair but I would hate for people to think that that is as good as their natural hair can look, even if a "professional" does it.
ReplyDeleteI hope this video gets nixed.
I've been wondering about these typef videos. A few hundred of them were all uploaded within a matter of DAYS last month and now theres 2,500 of them. That alone is shady if you ask me. I'm not sure the account is actually affiliated with Tyra's site or just someone trying to destroy her image...but I remember checking the hair tuts section when the new site launched and not only did every single article suggest the use of some form of heat to style African American hair but they were also over simplified and had no step by step photos.
ReplyDeleteAre you sure this was not intended to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek? I mean the terrible end result and the loud crunchy / breaking sound as she wielded the paddle brush through her hair seems to suggest as much. Songbird
ReplyDeleteIs this a joke??!!!
ReplyDeleteI do not believe this is a joke. There are at least 5 other eye gouging videos on the type f site itself.
ReplyDeleteI think that if this was a joke, it would be seriously not funny at all. I also spotted very obvious signs of damage (like funny bald spots and hairline totally missing). I do believe this expert really does this nonsense to her hair.

are.....you....kidding me???? what in the world....I HOPE this was a natural hair style tutorial PARODY and nothing serious? smh since when has regular conditioner protect your hair from heat??? and that wasn't even close to being a decent afro smh hoping this was just for laughs and not to try to educate.
ReplyDeleteAfter doing my own research, to determine whether said videos were limited to YouTube, I found them on Tyra's TypeF website. I highly doubt if not affiliated with Tyra or her brand, these would still be on her site or featured so prominently. Hopefully she listens and takes action immediately.

this has to be a joke. no way is this serious.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching the videos I came to the conclusion that Tyra is most likely not personally involved. I'm guessing she put her name/money behind the brand but is not directly involved with the making of the videos. They are just too awful and obviously done in a hurry. If she actually saw them and approved them, then I'm just floored!
ReplyDeleteThe so-called experts on natural hair haven't a clue. This smooth afro video takes the cake. When she was done, all I could do was laugh, seriously?!

Cassadie of Natural Selection blog wrote an open letter to TypeF and the site posted a response on their Youtube channel(Link below)
ReplyDeleteApparently there are two TypeF channels on Youtube, one is called Signature Series.

i am convinced these videos are hoaxes. there are actually two typef profiles floating around on youtube, and one of them doesn't feature these crazy hair tutorials. honestly, i think somebody hacked the real account and is trying to deliberately sabotage Tyra's good name. it will come out. it will come out!
ReplyDeleteOh darn, I missed it. Looks like it's gone "private".
ReplyDeleteTo all of you saying the videos are a hoax, seriously they are not. There are many of the same videos in the hair care section of typef.com
ReplyDeleteThere is no hacking or hoaxing involved. Type F made a critical mistake.
The latest message on twitter from type F is
'Dear typeF fans and supporters, thank you very much for voicing your concerns about the specific videos found on our YouTube channel. We have disabled the videos in question and will have our editorial team review each one based on your feedback. If you have further concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us directly. Thank you for your patience in advance.'
I feel sorry for the woman who did it! She clearly wants to give good advice, but it has gone horribly wrong and the online natural community has got its teeth out!
ReplyDeleteLela I think she should be ashamed. Everything she says is good (use of water, oils, protectant, low heat) but her practice of these things is mediocre. She is supposed to be a certified stylist!!
ReplyDeleteToday you can find really good videos all over youtube on the subject of combing or styling natural hair but this lady has the audacity to rip her hair out with a brush and call it detangling.
I think if she was a learner and not a stylist she could be excused. However she is supposed to be giving an expert review, so I feel like she deserves the full on sparta treatment.
Aww man! It's gone private - I wanted to be shocked and outraged too! :-(
ReplyDeleteTo clear things up, there are 2 seperate Type F Youtube channels.
ReplyDeleteType F - the one with the disastrous videos
Type F - Signature Series
There is also the Type F website. www.typeF.com
If you go and search the Type F website for the disastrous videos, you will not find them ANYWHERE.
AND, if you go to the Type F - Signature Series, there are actually very informative videos on makeup and hairstyling (there are none featuring the lady above, and not very many HAIR videos)
These findings have led me to believe that the OFFICIAL youtube channel and website are:
Type F - Signature Series
www.typef.com
The Type F Youtube videos involving the lady above is a fake duplicate of the actual website, created by someone to be humorous (EPIC FAIL). They are not sponsored or in anyway affiliated with the official Type F YT channel or website endorsed by Tyra Banks.
All info listed above is my theory and opinion on the phenom, and is not to be taken as fact. Go check them out for yourselves.
Lacoya - I personally checked www.typef.com before writing this blog post and the videos were there. All the afro hair videos with Joann Robertson were taken down from www.typef.com and youtube. This was done sometime yesterday following the string of negative comments on youtube and twitter.
ReplyDeleteThe link I posted ( http://www.typef.com/video/rid-noticeable-hair-parting/?pid=1&wa_vrid=f3b88b3e-1017-4418-877d-7748c4ac95bf&cp=1&wa_vlsrc=continuous ) has now been deleted. It is directly from www.typef.com.
There was no hoax, it was not an attempt at humour, these were 'serious' guides to taking care of natural hair.
I do not think that Tyra herself is responsible for these videos or that she endorsed them directly. What she did do is give typef free reign to use her name. Someone at typef chose the wrong person to give hair tutorials especially on the 'afro' hair section (right now there are videos of a girl wearing what seems to be a wig/weave giving advice on how to take care of curly hair)
I am glad type f deleted the videos.
Jo - lol!! I am so glad you missed it, it was terrible!!
Lacoya - I found many videos actually still with the same lady on www.typef.com

http://www.typef.com/video/keep-hair-having-static/
http://www.typef.com/video/black-hair-frizzy-brittle-ends/
I did check out the Type F site and found this particular gem. http://www.typef.com/video/comb-top-hair/?wa_vlsrc=post-plate&wa_vrid=94cca6c7-b2d1-4b2d-9576-c59b24eedaca
ReplyDeleteThat's a mess.
I am glad I missed this foolishness.
ReplyDeleteWOW!
ReplyDeleteThanks fa shuttin me down, JC. LOL!
I love Tyra so I searched to make sure that these videos were NOT hers. I guess they just took them down too quick! Womp Womp. :( Well at least yeah, I don't think she is to blame, but I guess she should be more careful as to what/whom she is actually allowing her name to be used for. SMH!
lol Mikimu
ReplyDeleteCarol - I missed your link!
Lacoya - I love Tyra too!! I love her female empowerment platform and I love that she is LGBT friendly. I do think that type f is taking the right steps to correct the mess, there was clearly a missing link somewhere in the chain.
are we involved in a social experiment because in this day with all the information out there, the researcher was seriously lazy.
ReplyDeletep.s. embedded vids can be seen on kisforkinky.com
Here's the kisforkinky.com link for those that missed it...

If you guys check up on the stylist website she can do hair, bur on straight textures. She wears weaves so that takes account on her hairline and lack of knowledge on hair.
ReplyDeleteThe other videos are just as bad though-they had a women with an horrible weave basically teach "how to determine her hair type" , in her styling videos she acts like that mess is her own hair.
My gosh no wonder her hair is so rough looking! Talk about getting your facts wrong. Do better!!
