The best detangling comb for natural hair

This comb will change your life! Ok, as a scientist I should rephrase that..........This comb may (is highly likely to) change your life. I have never really cared for seamless combs, especially wooden seamless combs which do splinter! I have often thought there is no real value to them until I met the Hercules Sägemann.

The actual number on my comb is 5610 and it is the magic mini star. It is the baby version of what many Americans may know as the  Hercules Sägemann magic star jumbo rake comb (5660).

Now you need to pay some stupid money for the mini star 5610 comb in UK.............12GBP (or $20). Meanwhile, those of you across the pond can actually get the mini and jumbo rake for circa ($30). However, on the plus side, it is actually a great comb. It is handmade, entirely hard rubber and antistatic.

This comb is really good for detangling and produces little to no breakage. It is supremely sensitive to tangles, I would compare it to the effectiveness of a thorough finger detangling procedure. The only advantage is that it works faster.

You can see a video review from Milan at AGrlCanMAC here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMcGiZB16fE

Disclaimer:No Hercules Sägemann did not send me a comb or ask me to review it, Yes I bought it with my own money....well technically my husband's amazon account so my money too lol and yes I really really like it and I am not stingy on sharing what I like.

    1. lol! Go for it, it is really good. I think for your hair type (I visited your blog!), you may also want to buy some of the smaller sized combs in addition :)

  3. I have 3 Hercules Sagemann seamless combs ( HS1975, HS696, HS6450 ) that I use on my youngest daughter and LOVE!!!! I have never been a fan of wide tooth combs for here hair type because it never seemed to do anything so I didn't bother entertaining the Magic Star but have heard great things about that particular comb but Hercules Sagemann have great seamless combs and are certainly worth the investment. That actually reminds me...I've been putting off doing a post on the combs, lol!

  4. Please where can one find it in the UK? I don't mind the price as it will be far cheaper than tracking it down, if at all I can find it, in Nigeria. Thanks.

  5. This is the one I got when a I learned that seamless wide-tooth combs existed--2 years ago! (Been natural almost all my life and I'm entering early middle age.)

Works great, but now I almost exclusively finger detangle, because I tend to let my hair get too dry. I work through knots and tangles better and more patiently with my fingers rather than ripping through with a comb.

    1. I mainly finger detangle too and even with this comb I still take 2-3 hours to finger detangle first. Finger detangling is still my main detangling method.

  6. I've had my Jumbo Rake for 3 years and it continues to be the best detangling tool in my arsenal. Glad you like it!!!

  7. Yes! I love the Magic Rake. I took forever to finally put up the cash to get that comb, but I am SO GLAD that I did.

As you explained, it is really akin to finger detangling. My breakage has decreased so much using this comb. Thanks for reviewing!

  8. I've got one of these! And I love it! Been using it for a couple of years now and I was pretty much as excited as you are about it when I first tried it lol. Have both the jumbo and the mini as I thought maybe the mini would be too small but i think it's fine! Good to travel with too :D x

  10. How ironic!
Just received my Magic Star mini today directly from the German manufacturers.
I personally have 4 Hercules combs:
    - Hercules Seamless Handle Streaker Comb 9 inches No.1975
    - Hercules Seamless Large Streaker Comb 7.25 inches No. 1050
    - Hercules Seamless Magic Mini Super Star 6 1/2 anti-static
    - Hercules Seamless Small Streaker Comb 5 inches No. 1049
As you can tell I am addicted to these combs!
I used to finger comb but it took forever, Hercules comb are the PERFECT alternative to finger combing.

They are non-porous, guaranteed hygienic inhibiting the growth of mould, mildew and/or bacteria.
Unlike porous wooden, resin (bone) and plastic combs Hercules Sägemann combs can be used in the shower.
Each comb is cut to perfection & have an accurate finish, seamless (no line in the middle of the teeth like other combs) and smooth edges make it the perfect comb for snag-free de-tangling of naturally curly hair regardless of hair type.

These seamless combs will last a life time making them a wonderful investment for your natural curly hair!

Excellent post & I'm glad you love these combs as much as I do!!

    1. Thanks for dropping by Anita, I did not think of the non porous part being beneficial, but you are right!

    2. Wow Anita you are in love with his combs! I have the Jumbo rake and I got my hubby on to them and he purchased a combo pack of the Jumbo and Mini Rake. I would like to know which one of the smaller combs work for pulling out extra shed hair.. my Jumbo rake does do a really great job pulling out most of the shed hair, but I sometimes want to go over again with a slighter smaller comb to be sure its all out.

  11. Thanks for the review! I will be purchasing this soon.

  12. Love this comb! I have the jumbo and the mini. I mostly use the jumbo. I find though that as my hair gets longer I still need to finger detangle before cleansing but once I am conditioning this works fantastic for my second round of detangling, the joys of having kinky hair lol!

  13. I own a Hercules Sagemann Magic Star Jumbo Rake Comb and I love it! It's a really sturdy and well-made seamless wide-toothed comb.

Finger detangling is my main detangling method for my kinky, coily, super dense hair but every once in a while when my hair is extra tangly I bust out my Hercules Sagemann Magic Star Jumbo Rake Comb. I only use it after lightly finger-detangling though.

I may have to buy the Hercules Sagemann Magic mini Star Rake Comb soon. Hmmm...

    1. lol I would love to get the jumbo rake but there is no way I am paying as much as I have to currently (the cheapest in stock price I have seen for UK delivery is $45).

  14. Hmmm...I think I may just purchase these. I've been thinking about it for years. I have the rake and detangler bone combs from Hair Sense. They seem okay but I lose a lot of hair when I'm detangling. Could be from breakage, shedding or a combination of both.

JC, I'm wondering from a scientific perspective, is there less mechanical breakage from a hard, less flexible comb or one with more flexible teeth. Bone combs aren't very flexible and the Sagemann's don't seem very flexible either. After using bone combs for a year or so, I've been thinking of returning to a more flexible rubber comb. What do you think?

    1. Great question! I have often wondered the same thing. The tangle teezer is touted as being good because it is flexible but this brush ripped my hair. From my experience, a flexible comb is good for hair which is not very curly (straight/straightened, wavy and possibly large curls). For curly and curly kinky hair, I think a hard comb like the hercules sägemann is useful because it will always stop at the point where hair is tangled, very similar to how your fingers can find tangles. This allows you never to rip through your hair.

I must look up some combing studies though and see if there is any data.

  15. I have a jumbo magic rake, and it is the business. I bought the HS1975 and the HS696W. OMG. I love the fact I can get the medium tooth comb through my curls and just shed hair comes out. Like someone said earlier, I should have had these in my arsenal years ago.

  16. I have the jumbo and I love it! I can even comb my hair dry without losing a lot of hair ( I try not to though) Idk if anyone else shares this experience but when it falls in my shower my heart skips a beat because of the noise loud noise it makes (I guess because it's heavier than regular plastic combs) In those few seconds I have a mini panic attack out of fear of having to buy a new one lol. I'm happy to report thought that despite the noise it's still going strong after a year

  19. I took the plunge and purchased the jumbo and mini set. I must say, the jumbo Magic Star is MUCH better than the Hair Sense jumbo rake--I mean MUCH, MUCH better. If you're going to buy a high-end comb, it's the one to buy. It is incredibly smooth and being antistatic really does help the comb glide through hair. It's not going to do the work for you, though, and you still have to be gentle when detangling and use your fingers to work out complex knots.

That said I don't think that having the Magic Star is do-or-die, especially if you're just starting out. I used the Tool Structure Large Handle comb from Sally's for over two years and was able to retain over 4 inches in length each year (and it costs less than $3). Some of my 4b hair is near WL now (and what might be my terminal length), so I'm hoping that Magic Star will give me the edge that I need to push closer to HL.

I wish that I had saved myself some money and just purchased the jumbo Magic Star instead of the set because the mini is much too small to be comfortable to use.

  20. Finally ordered last night after watching a youtuber compare this comb, denman & a regular comb. I'm a visual person, this sealed the deal

  21. I bought the Magic Star Jumbo Rake (and couple other combs lol) beginning of year. I was not disappointed with my purchase. I'm relaxed and usually stretch for at least 12 weeks at a time and that comb really helped. I'm currently not using it now due to a setback, sticking to finger combing until my hair recovers but I would definitely recommend it. They are actually having a sale, Jumbo & Mini Magic Rake for $29.95 http://www.hotcombs.net/magic-star-rake-set/

  22. Do you think this is better than the Deman brush specifically less breakage and ease?
