Is deep conditioning a myth : Updates

Do you remember this post asking if deep conditioning is a myth? Well if you don't, go back and read it because next week I will be updating it with new information and more studies that I have discovered in the 3 years since writing the post. This will answer the questions

1. What substances are scientifically known to penetrate hair?
2. Does heat make a difference to conditioning?
3. Can you over condition hair?

So you need to be here on Monday next week to get all the juicy bits!!

  5. Hi JC -

I'm transistioning and I think the only issue I've been having is the conditioning process. Non-silicone conditioners that had "slip" when I was relaxed don't have that same slip now that I'm 5 months post. I'm trying to find a good deep conditioner with slip. I've been doing a lot of co-washing but I do use silicons so I also need to find a good slippery cleansing shampoo. What do you recommend? I usually set my hair so I haven't had any problems with breakage when my hair is dry. My new growth is typically soft thanks to Qhemets and Castor oil! I would just break down and relax but I'm actually loving the look and feel of my hair. It feels amazing!

    1. Your shampoo does not need to have slip, ideally you should not be manipulating your hair too much at the shampoo stage and focus more on getting your scalp clean. The run off from the shampoo on the scalp is usually good enough to clean hair without making it feel overly dry.

Your detangling conditioner should have slip and you are correct to say that silicone is a good ingredient for that. However you also mentioned you like castor oil. Have you ever tried adding a litttle bit to your conditioner to create that slip?

Slippery conditioners will not tend to be deep conditioners which are thicker in consistency. Normally light easy to squeeze out conditioners work. Things that readers like and have mentioned include VO5 and herbal essences range which are good for detangling. Aveda and giovanni products are also often mentioned. There are mixed reviews for natural lines like kinky curly, curls and shea moisture but they are popular.

Qhemets that you refer to is one where I have never seen a bad review for. The biggest complaint is usually the price.

Good luck with your journey :)
