Hair Length Checks and Your Sanity

How often do you check your hair length - weekly, monthly?

I am all for accountability when it comes to people who have a length goal. I do however think that some of us can drive ourselves star crazy because in truth, do you really know how small half an inch is?

I loved this article by Brit blogger - A Simple Thing. Please read it and then get out your measuring tape.

  1. i checked like 10 months in when I officially big chopped then like 2.5 years in when I finally straightened for the first time and saw that it was down my back. I wasn't one to obsess over the length, just let it do it's thang and it did :D

  3. Hi JC,

Funny you should post this today. Just last night I had a moment of curiosity about the length of my hair so I whipped out the trusty tape measure (which I NEVER do) and actually measured it. I do have a length goal and probably won't be checking the length via tape measure again because I just don't see the point. I guess now that I have the data (the scientist in me...LOL) I can refer to it as a reference as I reflect on my hair journey.

  4. I want my twist to be shoulder length. Since twist are my preferred style, I get to see this style frequently. I do look back at past pictures to get a sense of the difference I do find the since my goal is on shrunken hair, I do not feel the need to blow dry, straighten, or tape measure to check on my goal. I know it will take 2-3 years, so no need to obsess if it is going okay until 5/2013.

  5. I USED to check my hair every three months. I saw how it was driving me crazy and realized how impractical it was when my main goal now is transitioning--not retaining length. I no longer check.

  6. I don't straighten my hair to check length (I don't use heat at all, actually), so I just stretch it. I don't have a schedule to check my length, either, but I just finished a 6 month challenge at the beginning of August, and took measurements at the beginning and end of it. I think, from here on out, breaking out the tape measure every six months or so will be good enough for me.

  7. I have never checked my length, but sometimes I wish I would because at times it seem alike it has not grown at all. I'll feel better when its long enough that the shrinkage stops bugging me! LOL

  8. Haha, I was checking quarterly, however after my last failed length check, I have no motivation to check, I'm just over it.

  9. I haven't had the energy to be concerned with the length of my hair. ( I just had a baby.) I blew out my hair and was surprised by all of the growth. I've been keeping it simple and taking care of my hair.

  10. Thanks for sharing Jc!
I've never measured my hair. I think I'm just too lazy to follow up on monthly checks. The article reminds me of the saying about a watched pot...

  11. I never really do length checks- Nat I hear ya!
But I know when my hair has grown, I also know that it is always growing and can I really be bothered with the hassle of straightening, stretching, pulling down that comes with a length check? No. Simples :)

  13. I've never measured, but like Smallfro, I have looked at pics taken since my big chop and noticed growth. I also have stretched a dry braid or two and noticed shoulder length. Maybe in another year or so, I will do an official measure, but I'm not so concerned about length as I am a healthy regimen.

  14. I have never measured my hair, but half an inch a month, really? I colour treat my hair, so I know it doesn't grow too fast. And reading this made me curious, so I pulled my ruler out of the drawer and measured my new groth - it's been less than half an inch in t-w-o months. I wonder if anyone's hair really grows half an inch in a month. Maybe it's just one of these myths that drive women crazy. And make them buy pills and whatnot ;)

  16. Every day, Mrs. Jc. It's that serious lol it's hard not to when you have dyed hair that makes your new growth painfully obvious
