Money: Blog vs Youtube

I am trying to clear out my inbox today and found this from 2 months ago (eep Sorry Shelly!). She asks, ' I am a long time fan of both yourself and kimmaytube. I found out that there is money to be made from videos and I am wondering if the same is true for posts on blogs. It is just out of curiosity so if you don't want to say it's cool.'

Blogging is probably one of the worst choices if you want to make some money. There are high traffic blogs which struggle to stay afloat because of lack of revenue. I have been publishing ads on this blog for nearly a year and here is my statement to date

Yep around 50 dollars would be my total income for the year..........what a terrible job lol. A low traffic day (1600 views) like yesterday nets me around 2-3 pence (4-6 cents) and a high traffic day may get me around £1.00 (2 dollars).

Could I be earning more from the ads? Yes I could, but even that would probably only double or triple the amount so 150 dollars is still nothing to write about (plus my contract with google technically forbids me from discussing this lol)

Blogging can be a money business if you are willing to sell advertising space. This ranges from the standard picture on the side bar to the paid for reviews. Bloggers are also often sent products free of charge and you need to think plane ticket here not just hair butters.............(yes plane tickets!).

In short, blogging can be a business if you want it to be. I personally define my success as just being here, present year after year. There are success stories from blogging (for example deuce) but in my opinion, youtube millionaires have been made. If you are looking for a wise business decision, I would say youtube is a better bet!

  1. It is lovely to see you back Tanisa (more used to saying Olivia but I can learn!). Already sub'ed to the new blog!

  2. I wish people would stop worrying about who is getting what in the natural hair world. If you feel like you are getting good information that works for you, then great. If not, don't patronize that person's blog/vlog.

  3. Yonnie you make a great point. I think though that now people see social media as a way of earning an income. I think that the lack of transparency on how exactly people manage to earn an income leads to suspicion and doubt on how honest bloggers really are.

  4. The money issue is one of the reasons there is so much junk in cyberspace. Before the money came along, most bloggers were doing it because they enjoyed it. Now there are many who start one without giving much thought to what they are putting out.

  5. I think the money does matter when you're talking about the integrity of product reviews and the blog as a whole. There is a blog that used to be one of my favorite natural hair/beauty blogs. I say "used to be" because now it's apparent that the blogger is taking everything that is given to her by companies and reviewing it or documenting her sponsored beauty experiences. It's like one big commercial. Sad

  8. I appreciate the integrity of this blog and prefer the written form in general. But I also understand the allure of making money for the same amount of hard work. I really can't hate on somebody for figuring out the money. That said, I really don't like going to YouTube for serious information (you know, serious like my hair.) It seems like the Wild West and everybody is out there shooting.

  9. Aww thanks Golden. No plans as yet but maybe in the future

Malva - I love writing, thank you! I think writing forces you to learn and absorb (at least it does for me).

Carol - Thanks too, I laughed at that Wild West expression. Youtube can be wild sometimes which I find entertaining!

  10. I doubt anyone could ever make a living off blogging, I write because I enjoy and if someone paid me to review something I would feel as if I couldn't say bad stuff.
LOL@ Carol, its true everyone is on YouTube!

  11. Good to know! I am still figuring out the right balance of blog posts and video posts. Video posts are definitely a lot more time consuming, but i agree that they can be a lot more effective.
