Moisturing Hair Oils

During the previous discussion on the oh so wonderful coconut oil, LiLiMarie raised an important issue of allergies. I thought I'd move this into a post for others who may have a similar problem.

The alternatives to the moisturising power of coconut oil are olive oil or avocado oil. Both these oils do also penetrate into the cortex (Journal of Cosmetic Science, pg 299,2005).

I personally like coconut oil because of its scent. I guess adding a few drops of a fragrant essential oil might steer me to olive oil.

Some scientists suggest (for those of you who do use coconut oil) that you can actually get more of an effect by mixing coconut oil and olive oil. I'm being a little bit lazy today and will send you over to thebeautybrains who have explained this quite well and actually did the research for me!

I'm building a research list for oils and so far I have jojoba oil, castor oil, olive oil, avocado oil and shea butter. If you want me to look up any others email me or leave a comment!

  14. How about camellia oil, i heard that it is real good for smoothing your cuticles. I read when your cuticle are smooth you have less frizz. Aubrey organics has a conditioner called white camellia, it's suppose to be very good as an anti-frizz conditioner. Have you ever used this oil or conditioner?

  16. It hasn't been researched Celina, it may do but so far only coconut oil has been researched. The beauty brains blog refers to avocado and olive oil from a patent but not from an actual scientific article

  18. How can an oil be considered moisturizing? Am I missing something? Or am I confusing hydrating with moisturizing? I have seen ads claiming that certain butters are moisturizing. Because they hold in water and make the hair strand soft - is that what a moisturizer does? Or does a moisturizer have to penetrate the hair shaft to be considered a moisturizer?
