Poll: Did the Tangle Teezer Split Your Hair?

After reading my previous reviews on the tangle teezer, reader Fridah asked the question, ' I am wondering if you see splits in your hair after using the tangle teezer?'

A: On my part, the brush literally just shredded my hair. It was immediate breakage which I was initially unsure of because I do not use a comb but during my second use of this brush I was sure. Furthermore the tiny little broken coils which I have not seen for atleast 3 years were present.

So, no it did not split my hair, it broke it off. I can assume that people with less breakage susceptible hair but whose hair is affected by the TT may notice splits after a few uses (maybe a month to six months).

My hair is very fine, very curly and very kinky. It really does not deal well with any kind of combing or rough treatment (like rough finger combing!). I cannot say that my experience is reflective of the average. I do think that ultimately if your hair generally does not deal well with brushes, do not bother with the TT. However if you have previously not had issues with brushes, it may be worth it for you to try.

Have you tried the TT and did it split or break your hair? Vote in the poll, Comment in the box!

  1. SSK city sister. Which is a shame because I LOVE how it feels on my scalp, and how it smoothes my hair into styles. Definitely backing off until I get a trim and figure out if its worth using anymore.

  2. I have been using the TT for the past few months and have not noticed any split ends or damage, but then again I only use it in small sections when putting in twists never on large sections so maybe that is why. I also use it on my girls hair and it has not caused a problem at all, it really is a life saver for me. I was using the Denman brush and saw some definite hair breakage with that, it is gone bye bye,

  3. I only tried it once in March, and I must say that I am still cutting out mid-shaft splits out of my hair because of it. I have a pretty solid regimen, and the TT is the only new thing I have added. I was fine finger detangling, but I was led astray by all the hype. Now my hair is suffering because of it.

Oh my YT channel is "louloumatou"

  5. Thanks for all the comments.

Hybridomatech - thanks for letting me know about your YT channel. I loved your tattoo video. I thought it would be just tiny stuff but it wasn't!! I like tattoos on other people but I would not do one lol. I will definitely look at the hair videos in more detail later!

  6. Just trying it once.. and seeing broken 'o's all over the place was enough for me. So no.. it wasn't just split ends.. but completely severed strands for me..
    Back to finger detangling

  7. Hey, Hey, Hey YT It's yo girl TastiRedbone from YT, Louloumatou's buddy, lol. I love my tangle teaser and I have found that peple are not using it as a detangler and think it's some miracle brush and some it just doesn't work for. My hair is loving it. I only use it once a week on DC day, with saturated slippery Deep Condtioner and only in the shower. Any other time I use my fingers. My girl Splinta24 uses it the very same way and we are both loving the TT. Good luck ladies.

  8. If you don't use a comb, how do u comb ur hair? I tried going combless - but I find my finger detangling needs to be combined with a wide tooth comb.

  9. I agree Makeup Vixen - find it fascinating too that the poll so far looks equally split between likers and non-likers!

Layla - I only finger comb my hair and it is sufficient for me. I do not find combs to be particularly useful as my hair tends to coil back on itself so it is like unwinding it only to have it wind back up. A wide tooth comb in my case is just more work for the same result as finger combing.

However, what works for you is right! I do think that many people do prefer to follow finger detangling with a wide tooth comb or denman brush (commonly). I think for some people it is not possible to get rid of all the shed hair without these tools but for me it is possible.

  10. @ JC and Tastiredbone (hey hun!!): ooh i used the TT mostly in the shower with lots of conditioner on, as i would when normally detangling with my wide tooth comb or fingers. I did try it a few times on dry hair to smooth down sections when doing twists, but even in the shower detangling, i found lots of broken strands in the tub, disheartening really! i guess it's just like other hair products, some work for some and not for others. I am glad i tried it though, so i got rid of the "urge" (i am a PJ what can i say?!).
Jc, Thank you for checking out my videos! that's very sweet of you! :)

  11. Probably a dumb question, but here goes... How do I know whether the hair in the TT is broken off hair or shed hair? We definitely get hair in the brush when I use it on my 2yo daughter.

  12. Hybridomatech - yw :)

Jenny - Not a dumb question at all - the general thing with shed hair is that it has a bulb on the end of it. However sometimes shed hair can break meaning you end up with part of the hair with a bulb and part without. I think if you are unsure you should try using the brush on half of the head and another tool on the half of the head. Compare the amount of hair from each side. A giveway for my hair (type 4 very fine, very curly, very kinky) is tiny little coils. My hair tends to snap off in these little O's. Generally people with thicker hair or less of curl rarely if ever see these tiny coils though.

  13. Jc, I think you and I have the same type of hair. I had issues with the Denman but not with the TT. Now granted I only use it once every other week and my hair is relatively short AND I use it only on damp hair. I haven't seen any splits, nor have I seen anywhere near the amount of breakage that I saw with the Denman.

  14. LBell I would agree that we have similar hair from previous descriptions. I have opted out of this comb and brush world lol. I do hope the brush continues to work for you!

  15. I am also a fine, thick, kinky hair head and was in disbelief of the little tiny broken coils I was seeing all around my house on the floor and on my shirts. I finally had an "AH HA" moment and realized after 2 months of using that darn TT it was damaging my hair. I'm partially mad but glad I don’t see/have splits and caught this craziness sooner than later. I so wanted it to work for me because it literally took me 1hr to detangle and in the past it took me 2-4 hours to wash detangle and twist my hair. I'm pulling out my Denman again.

  16. I have been using the TT for several months and haven't seen any breakage from using it. When I used the deman brush I could instantly see damage and got rid of it. for the TT I have learned that you have to detangle small sections at a time and with loads of conditioner .

  17. I use the TT once a week on wet hair, it seems to work fine...I have started using the denman brush after I use the TT (dont ask me why...becuz there is no method to my madness). I am not too versed on the whole natural hair thing though...so I dont know how to spot split ends etc...I hope to go to Morris Roots for them to assess the health of my hair.

  18. I know i am a little late, but i just want to say that I have been using the TT for almost a month now and I haven't experiences no breakage so far. I REALLY like it so im hoping I do not get any breakage.. I just posted a video on youtube (screen name: jemy1415) showing a comparison between the TT and a fake Denman. I never liked the Denman but the TT is a keeper so far..

  21. I have fine, wavy hair that tends toward dryness and frizziness. I use about a dime-sized amount of the Shielo Antioxidant Leave in Protectant on wet hair and then air-dry. I end up with shiny, wavy, frizz-free hair, which is amazing since I've tried pretty much every frizz-fighter around. Also, after a month I noticed my hair is breaking a lot less and overall looking healthier. Plus, the smell is amazing. Great product!
