How often do you shampoo your hair?

Following this post, where a number of you said you can go without shampoo, I would like to ask how often do you use shampoo?

Please feel free to answer in the poll to the right!

Shampoo means a commercial type shampoo - includes SLS or SLS free brands, castile soap, shampoo bars and any other type of soap. IF you use these type of products please vote on how often you use the product.

For the purpose of this poll - conditioner washing, apple cider vinegar, baking soda, clays or herbs are excluded from the definition of shampoo . IF you use these type of products EXCLUSIVELY to shampoo your hair and wish to vote please vote as NEVER and for how long you have not used a commercial shampoo.

Also if you use herbs to clean your hair, please comment and let me know which ones because I'm curious to do the research about this.

Thanks!

  1. I use shikakai and brahmi to wash my hair- been doing it since about August of 09. I really enjoy it and I probably won't go back to conventional shampoo (unless I happen to use a styling product that leaves a lot of goop). The thing I like about it is that it doesn't seem to pull all the oils out of my hair. Somehow my hair feels clean, but not at all stripped. My scalp also likes it. I'm a natural 4a and I wash my hair using this mixture once a week.

Using herbs definitely changed my perception of what clean hair feels like (in a good way- I think). It feels like the difference between using hard detergent versus a gentle cleanser on your hands or face. Both can get your skin clean, but the harsh detergent may leave you feeling a little too 'stripped'. Thats how conventional shampoo makes my hair feel now.

  2. Thanks anon, I have read about shikakai and amla but I was under the impression they were derived from fruit. Brahmi is new to me. Clearly I need to do some reading!

  3. Hey Jc, I use a natural shikakai/amla/bhringraj shampoo bar every 2-3 weeks. I have the powders as well but have yet to use them as a wash. So far so good with the bar though my hair never feels stripped, always moisturized when using the bar (probably b/c ofthe bhringraj)

  4. I use Giovanni Smooth as Silk Shampoo 1-2 times a week. I just BC'd last Friday to about a half an inch of hair so I'm still trying to find the "right" products for me.

  5. Hi Jc: I voted (once a week) but I think I am going to try cowashing in the summer. I still have an interest in trying Ayurvedic herbs but I just haven't purchased them yet.

  6. I usually shampoo about two times a week....but it depends on the shampoo I'm using. I conditioner about three times though.

  7. Thanks Jonezy - bhringraj another new name to me!

Kayso, weldome to natural hair. You should definitely stick around and read the older posts (just use the search button). I think it can be overwhelming with the amount of information but let your hair tell you what it wants and always tweak your routine! Hope you have a great journey!

CallaLily - You know I'm going to have to rush back to your site to read up on ayurveda again. You did a really good intro!

  9. You're right JC, they are derived from the seeds of fruit! Shikakai looks (and smells) kinda like tamarind to me. I used the term "herbs" as in 'indian herbs', because that how I've seen it done. But yeah, I guess technically I'm using a ground seed to wash my hair :)

  10. I use Dr Bronners Magic Castille Soap (Peppermint scented) once a week. I like to rinse with brewed Yerba Mate tea.

  11. Depending on what I put in my hair during the week I can shampoo once a week or once every two weeks. I'm on the hunt for the bar shampoos because they have been getting so many rave reviews. Until then I'm sticking to my Aussie Moist Shampoo (and conditioner) or my Naked Naturals Shea Butter and Avocado Smoothing Shampoo (and conditioner.)

I'm natural (4a/b) & I've noticed that my hair just doesn't care for a lot of products on the shelf.

  12. i love using indian herbs for my hair, the ones i use are skikakai, amla, aritha and bringeraj. Bringeraj is one of the most moisturizing product i have ever used on my hair. I mix all four into a tea, then i add this tea to some cheap conditioner and wow, the best co-wash ever. I left all of the commerical shampoo behind since my new love. Now my girls are hook, they can't get over how shiny and silky their hair is now.

  13. I'm kind of in transition right now. I haven't shampooed for about a month, because I've been using bentonite clay to clean my hair. It was working really well, but then last week my scalp was flaking for the first time since I went natural (2 years this month!). I think I'm going to go back to shampooing with castille soap or JR Ligetts shampoo bar every 3-4 weeks.

  15. Based on your definition of shampoo, it has been quite some time since I used shampoo. In fact, perhaps 6 months now? The shampoo I used was a shampoo bar.

  16. I jsut got back from India and bought Shikakai powder based on an ayurvedic doctor's recommendations. So I bought the powder but have no idea how to use it. Do you mix it with water to wash hair? or mix with oil and leave on overnight and then shampoo.

  17. Hi JC, I alternate between beaten shikakai nuts and bringraj shampoo. I have curly medium thick virgin hair. I oil my hair with nyle oil the day before and wash with above. I also condition my hair once every week with either avacado or banana or coconut milk. I see my hair is growing much stronger and feels much smoother. This has been my routine since 9 months. I am not giving up. -Madhoo
